Baptism

We are excited that you are interested in baptism.

Jesus was baptized and set the example for us to follow. At his baptism, Jesus was immersed in the Jordan River then came up out of the water (Mt. 3:13-17). By being immersed we are dramatically showing our complete confidence in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Going under the water represents Christ's death and coming out of the water illustrates His resurrection. The Bible says we are “buried with him through baptism” (Romans 6:4). By uniting with Jesus in baptism we bury our old way of life and begin a new life directed by his resurrection power.

We consider it a privilege to walk with you as you take this next step on your spiritual journey.

The Baptism Process

The baptism process at Manchester Christian Church has been designed to be both simple and meaningful.
  1. Listen to the baptism message. You may request a CD at the email address below or listen to the message online.
  2. Complete the Baptism Registration Form. Once we receive your registration form, we will contact you to schedule your baptism and answer any remaining questions.
  3. Write a brief summary of your story. A portion of your story will be read at your baptism. The reason we ask you to write your story is that it allows friends, family, and even those you don't know to celebrate the amazing transformation God has worked in your life.

  4. Get baptized! Most baptisms are scheduled for 12:45 on Sunday mornings.

For questions, please contact Bruce Southerland at baptism@manchesterchristian.com or call the church office for assistance 622-9677 .

Baptism Message

If you think baptism is the next step for you, take thirty minutes and listen to a talk about baptism by Frank and Josh. Their message answers the questions we are most often asked about baptism. Click here to download baptism message.

The Ethiopian asked Philip, "Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?" Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus. As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the Ethiopian said, "Look, here is water. Why shouldn't I be baptized?"... Then they went into the water and Philip baptized him. — Acts 8:34–38

A Word Concerning Infant Baptism

If the purpose of Baptism is to publicly identify a believer in Jesus Christ, you may well be asking yourself, "What was the significance of my Baptism as a baby?" In the Bible, we find parents bringing their children to Jesus. He held them and prayed for them and told us to welcome them. But He did not baptize them, and He did not tell anyone else to baptize them. Baptism is for those who have made a personal decision to trust Christ alone for their salvation.

If you were baptized as a child, it was the intent of your parents that you would one day be a follower of Christ. Your Baptism as an adult can be viewed as the fulfillment of your parents' wishes. It in no way repudiates the Baptism you received as a child.
